Tips: Saving Power in the Laundry

Laundry is one of the most primary basic habits of maintaining consistent hygiene. Since most of us do at least a few chunks of laundry each week, it is worth taking steps to reduce energy use.

If you do not own a washing machine until now and are planning to invest in one, make sure it is energy efficient.  In this article, we have listed a few tips that will help save you a great amount of power consumption while doing your laundry.

Use Cold Water

On an average washing machine consume about 60% of their power to heat water. Hence, if you use normal regular water to wash your clothes you will save a lot of electricity bill. This is the simplest trick of all the tips that are to follow in our article. There is not much difference in the cleanliness of your clothes if washed in cold rather than hot. You will save twice as much on your electric bill if considering to follow this tip.

Reduce the number of wash cycles

It is advisable to wait and let your laundry fill up to its brim than running the washing machine every day. Once you have a laundry full of clothes (which could differ for most people depending upon the number of family members or roommates) on an average 3 cycles per week, you yet end up saving a great deal of money on your electricity bills.

Moreover, this action accounts for conservation use of energy and is highly recommended to adopt this practice to save water.

Remember your washer will use about the same amount of energy no matter the size of the load, so fill it up every time you use it.

Use appropriate Detergent for washing

Depending on the type of washing machine you own, make sure you buy an appropriate detergent. For example, a top load washing machine will require a top load detergent and similarly the same goes for the front-load type. The suitable detergent not only helps increase the shelf life of your machine but also cleanses the clothes seamlessly. Too much lather from the detergent will make your washing machine waste more water to rinse and thereby excessive wastage of electricity.

Avoid using dryers

Along with the washing machine, most homeowners use dryer’s to dry clothes. We suggest to let your clothes dry off by the sun. Develop a habit to use dryers only when the sun is not out or there is an urgent need to dry your clothes.

Switch Off the power after use

With busy schedules and daily routine, we often forget to turn off the power of our machines. This usually is common with washing machine that automatically reset on stand-by mode but is not completely switched off. Make sure you put it off and unplug from the socket too to save on your energy bills.
